As a result of war or human rights violations, 65.6 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide by the end of 2016. Among them are nearly 22.5 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18.
The 2016 New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, signed on by over 190 countries, gave UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the task of developing “a global compact on refugees”. Today, the agency leads international action to protect people who have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution.
The #WithRefugees campaign is designed to demonstrate global public solidarity with refugees. The campaign invites individuals to sign the #WithRefugees petition and encourages organisations to join the coalition.
The coalition helps amplify the #WithRefugees message by bringing together diverse organisations with a shared commitment to refugees, to help spread the message of refugee solidarity to a broad audience. The coalition currently has nearly 300 members, including universities, sports federations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), corporations and other groups.
What does the petition involve?
The #WithRefugees petition asks leaders to ensure that every refugee child gets an education; every refugee family has somewhere safe to live; and that every refugee can work or learn new skills to support their families.
